Glossary of Casino

Hand
:
The cards held by a player to form a complete group or total, such as a 10, 9 to form a 19 total hand in blackjack.
Handle Slammers (Slots)
:
A cheat at slots who probes the weakness of a machine by manipulation and then slams the machine's handle to complete his scam.
Hand Mucker (Blackjack)
:
A cheat who removes small cards from blackjack decks and replaces them with ten-value cards and aces.
Hard Total (Blackjack)
:
Any total without an ace, or where an ace is counted as 1 in the hand. Examples: 10, 7 and 10, 6, ace both are hard 17s.
Hard way (Craps)
:
The term for a 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5.
Hard way Bet (Craps)
:
A bet that the number 4, 6, 8, or 10 will be rolled as a hard way before it is rolled easy or before a 7 shows on the dice.
Heat
:
The pressure a casino puts on a winning player, generally a card counter in blackjack.
High Card (Video Poker)
:
A jack, queen, king, or ace, when paired, which pays the player back his original bet.
High-Low Bet (Roulette)
:
An outside straight wager on whether the next spin will be a high or low number, paid off at even money.
High Pair (Video Poker)
:
A pair of jacks, queens, kings, or aces, which pays the player back his original bet.
High Rollers
:
The popular term for big bettors.
Hit (Blackjack)
:
To draw an additional card to the original hand. This is usually indicated by the player scraping his cards toward him, or, in casinos where the cards are all dealt face up, pointing a finger at his cards.
Hold
:

Hold Button (Video Poker)
:
The button that, when pressed, will hold a card in the original hand before the draw.
Hole Card (Blackjack)
:
The dealer's unseen card, forming half his original hand.
Hop Bet (Craps)
:
A one-roll wager on any number the player selects, at disadvantageous odds.
Horn Bet (Craps)
:
A combined one-roll wager on the 2, 3, 11, and 12.
Hot, Hot Hand
:
The gambler's term for a winning hand or series of hands.
Hot Roller (Craps)
:
A shooter who is throwing a great many "numbers" and also making a series of points.
House Advantage
:

Impair (Roulette)
:
French for odd.
Inside Bet (Roulette)
:
A wager on the numbers 1-36, 0, 00, or any combination of these numbers.
Inside Numbers (Craps)
:
The place numbers 5, 6, 8, and 9.
Insurance, Insurance Bet (Blackjack)
:
An optional wager by the player that the dealer has a blackjack when the dealer's upcard is an ace.
Insure a Blackjack
:
An insurance bet made by a player when he holds a blackjack.

Jackpot (Slots)
:
The grand payout on a machine.
Jokers Wild (Video Poker)
:
A type of video poker machine that has a joker in addition to the normal 52-card pack. The joker is a pure wild card and can be used as any card to enhance or make any hand.
Junket
:
An organized tour of gamblers to a hotel-casino where they are given free room, food, and beverages plus their air fare, in return for gambling a prescribed minimum amount of money.
Junketmaster
:
An organizer of a junket.
Junket Member
:
A player who is part of an organized junket or tour.

Keno
:
A game in which players purchase tickets on which they mark groups of numbers in the hope that those numbers will be selected.
Keno Blank
:

Keno Board (Keno)
:
An electrically controlled board that shows the number of the game and the numbers called by the operator of the keno game.
Keno Lounge (Keno)
:
The area in which a keno game is called and operated.
Keno Runner (Keno)
:
A house employee who collects players' tickets throughout the casino and adjacent areas and presents them to the keno writers as a convenience to the bettors.
Keno Writer (Keno)
:
The casino employee who collects the players' bets, writes the duplicate ticket, and pays off winners.
Kicker (Video Poker)
:
An odd card, usually a high card; held by the player for the draw. Thus, a 3 3 A hand consists of a pair of threes plus the ace kicker.
King, King Number (Keno)
:
Any one number circled on a ticket whose purpose is to combine with other numbers to form various combinations.
King Ticket (Keno)
:
A ticket played with one or more king numbers marked on it, making it a very versatile ticket.

Ladderman
:
The term for a boxman or floorman who supervises a casino game from a seat on a ladder.
La Grande (Chemin de Fer)
:
The French term for a 9 dealt as a natural.
La Petite (Chemin de Fer)
:
The French term for the 8 dealt as a natural.
Las Vegas Strip
:
Las Vegas Boulevard South, in Las Vegas, Nevada, running from Sahara Avenue south up to and including Tropicana Avenue, containing a group of worldfamous and luxurious hotel-casinos. Also known as the Strip.
Layout
:
The imprint on the felt surface of a gambling table showing either the betting boxes and rules of the game, or the various bets and payoffs that can be made, with appropriate spaces for those wagers.
Lay the Odds (Craps)
:
An odds bet by a wrong bettor against a point or come number which, if won, will be paid off at less than even money.
Lay Wager (Craps)
:
A place bet against a number repeating by a wrong bettor, who pays a 5 percent commission in order to make this wager.
Let It Ride®
:
A form of 5-card poker in which players have the option of retaining or giving up their bets.
Liberty Bell (Slots)
:
The name of the original slots machine invented by Charles Fey of San Francisco.
Loose, Loose Slots (Slots)
:
A slot machine that pays off liberally and gives the house only a small advantage over the player.
Low Pair (Video Poker)
:
A pair of l0s or cards of a lower rank, such as 9s, which alone don't constitute a winning hand.

:
The French term for low.
Markers
:
Promissory notes or IOUs signed by players who have credit in casinos.
Martingale System
:
A progressive betting method in which the player doubles his bet after a previous loss.
Mechanic, Slots Mechanic (Slots)
:
The house employee who sets the machines for their payoffs and repairs broken slot machines.
Mills Machines (Slots)
:
The first machines to use fruit symbols and to have a jackpot.
Mini-Baccarat
:
The game of baccarat played on an ordinary gambling table, with one dealer’ to service the game
Mini-Junkets
:
A junket with different costs depending on how much the player is willing to put up as front money.

:

:

Muckers
:
